Biowaste - Wednesday MORNING

This first session has addressed the French biowaste context, focusing on its potential for anaerobic digestion, with a presentation of recent changes in the regulatory framework and an assessment of the market potential. An agro industry case-study has also examined the public consultation process and social acceptability issues for local projects.

In order to provide additional inputs to the debate, this first part has been complimented by examples from three other European countries : UK, Germany, Austria and Italy. Their specific biowaste contexts has been presented, as well as case studies of successful initiatives in terms of waste collection strategies or treatment technologies.

Biomethane - Wednesday AFTERNOON

Biomethane and its applications are key to the future development of biogas throughout Europe. The Biomethane Regions European project partners, as well as many other speakers, have provided a broad overview of this topic :

  • Advantages and disadvantages of the different upgrading technologies
  • French context for direct injection in the distribution and transport networks
  • National strategies and successful case studies in terms of direct injection into the grid in Germany and Denmark, addressing the main techno-economic stumbling blocks (seasonality of demand, distance to the network...)
  • Applications of biomethane for vehicles, with a case study from a Swedish region, and research program for small-scale biogas upgrading on the farm.

Plenary session Biogas & Wood Energy - Thursday MORNING

This high-level session aimed at advancing our understanding of the role biogas and wood energy can play in the upcoming energy transition. The ambition was also to create a discussion platform for this hot topic, in the context of the French national debate on the energy transition.

A quantitative review of these two sectors has been presented, as well as an analysis of the public strategy and support schemes at the national and regional levels. Then the role of territories and local authorities has been highlighted with the presentation of the "Positive Energy Territories" initiative in France, and accounts from representatives of pioneering territories in France and Germany. Finally, long term perspectives for synergies of bioenergies between them and with other renewable energy technologies have been presented by the French think-tank négaWatt, illustrating the crucial role of these two sectors (biogas and wood energy) in the energy transition.

Innovations in production and usage of Biogas - Thursday AFTERNOON

The fourth session studied different methods to improve and optimise the efficiency throughout the anaerobic digestion chain, from substrate feeding to biogas and digestate usage. Throughout Europe, anaerobic digestion is recognised as a technically sound solution, but improvements are always possible in terms of efficiency of biogas production, and adaptation to regulatory frameworks, which tend to foster more and more energy efficiency.

Best practices in operation and maintenance already provided concrete ideas to improve the efficiency of a biogas unit, then more exotic concepts such as hydrolysis or direct co-production of hydrogen and methane have been presented.

New technologies for biogas usage such as fuel cells have also been examined and discussed.

Finally, opportunities for the transformation of digestate into polymers have been presented.

Conference on Friday

Small-scale anaerobic digestion - Friday 22nd March MORNING

Small-scale anaerobic digestion (defined as less than 75 kWe) is a hot topic, be it in France where farmers seek to avoid the long project cycles of collective projects, or abroad where regulatory frameworks tend to favour this scale of operation. Whether it's adaptation of existing technologies ("downsizing") or totally new concepts dedicated to small scale, everybody tries to meet the double bottom line of cost reduction and simplification of operation and maintenance.

An overview of different approaches in this area have been offered by a Dutch consultancy (where the issues are close to those of the French Western regions, regarding animal farming). And a feedback has been provided on the "small-scale" call for proposals launched recently by ADEME. Several companies and project developers provided a brief panorama of their own differing solutions, and a round table debate to close the morning’s session allowed potential project developers to voice their comments or questions.

Digestate - Friday 22nd March AFTERNOON

This fourth session organised by our partner AILE, drawn a complete picture of the digestate issue, to gain a better understanding of how to best manage and utilise it. There have been feedbacks on the usage of digestate as fertiliser followed by a study of the current technologies for digestate treatment illustrated with real examples. The issue of marketing (homologation, norms) has been presented in another European country, to serve as an input to the current reflections in France. Finally, some feedback on digestate usage by farmers (members of AAMF) has been provided.
